Principles of Design: Emphasis
Peel, Paul - Portrait of Robert Andre Peel, 1892
EMPHASIS is a principle of design.
It refers to the special attention or importance given to one part or element in an art
Emphasis is used to create a center of interest in art composition. This is also called a "focal point" because the artist wants to direct and focus the attention of the viewer on the most important part of the art work.
Emphasis can be achieved through placement, contrast, colour, size, and repetition, among other means.
Paul Peel, as many other artists, used geometric figures to organize their work.
